Artist Roger Drake calls Guerneville home on the beautiful coast of Ca. US. As an artist of many mediums and interest, Drake's works at present seems to be focused on his collection of figurative portraits. Even though he is now using acrylics, he has mastered the translucent quality of watercolor. Today's post, I must admit, is somewhat selfish in nature. Drake's piece titled "MW Jar" of Modern Realism Still Life, is equally as amazing.

It is so deliciously crisp that it is hard to believe it is a painting. I've always strived for loose, fluid painting. But this movement of present day of modern still life paintings not only has me intrigued but memorized, and this painting of an item that many have in their kitchen cupboard is no exception. I love it! Bio: Painting for me is an adventure full of challenges on my path of self realization. Each image is presented as an emotional vision that luminates from my heart. I find an innate beauty in things that are temporal and unaffected. I use my artwork to create a mood and to tell part of a story. The viewer is allowed to expand and weave an interpretive cumulative response. A watercolor artist at heart, I now work entirely with acrylics on canvas.

In addition, his work is in private collections in New York. Ramon is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Ramon was born in Montecristy, Dominican Republic and raised in New York. He received an A.A.S. from Bronx Community College, NY.

This is a gem of a book. For all of the Georgia O'keefe fans, I highly suggest this little treasure.

Until very recently, an extraordinary and important series of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings was unknown even to her most ardent admirers. Rediscovered in 1987, the twenty-eight watercolors, now known as the Canyon Suite, shed light on a seminal period of the artist's life and early career.

The Eames duo and Steinberg independently were revolutionary artists that made a strong impact for decades. This classic fiberglass reinforced plastic armchair by Eames in the early 50's, was decorated with a drawing by the spontanous genius Saul Steinberg during his visit to the Eames Office.

I wanted to embellish a little on my last post about art brut/outsider art, so I browsed through etsy to see if there were any artist today that had true charm of late artist like Henry Darger (that I am) particularly fond of.

Thus artist Kelly Puissegu!

Blown away by Puissegu work, I would liken it some where between Saul Steinberg and Henry Darger. Yes, Steinberg is another of one my personal favorites. Now I feel that I hit the jack pot with this artist. Puissegu's paintings not only have delightful composition, but her wit and sense of color are a throw-back from the past masters with a style all her own.

art brut - outsiders art

Henry Darger (American, 1892-1973) Darger's work (above) has become one of the most celebrated examples of outsider art. Fascinating bio about Henry Darger on above link.

The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut "raw art" or "rough art", a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane-asylum inmates.

While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "outsider art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or Naïve art makers who were never institutionalized. Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds.

Outsider art has emerged as a successful art-marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1992). The term is sometimes misapplied as a catchall marketing label for art created by people outside the mainstream "art world," regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.

O'keeffe

Georgia O'Keeffe 1887-1986

The legendary O'Keeffe famous for her Cow Skulls and abstract flowers had a much broader appeal then most realize. In my opinion, she was way ahead of her time. Here is an image of "Radiator Building, Night New York, 1927. Oil on canvas.

I fortunately saw her paintings in exhibit in San Francisco a few years back. Her brillant color palette gave me chills. Ansel Adams once said about her, "She's a very great artist. Nobody can look at a painting without being deeply effected." I have to agree. She has been one of my inspirations for many, many years and continues to do so.

This is a taste of just a few from the tons of modern works from Michael Kvium. I wish I could tell you more about him. I discovered this artist around 10 years ago. His rich color palette and edgy composition fascinates me. Every written word that I could find about him is in Danish. If you know more about him, do tell.

I'm fascinated by the works of sculptor Ron Mueck. His pieces draw you in and you want to see more. Eerily life like, thought provoking, and genius. I would be hard pressed to have to pick a favorite. Wondering just how long a typical piece takes to make. To see more click here.

Ron Mueck (born 1958) is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor working in Great Britain.

Mueck is a is a former television and film model maker with no formal art training. Mueck's early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children's television and films, notably the film Labyrinth for which he also contributed the voice of Ludo, and the Jim Henson series The Storyteller.
